Driveway gate on my Ottawa fence: what does it add to the quote?
Driveway gate on my Ottawa fence: what does it add to the quote?
A driveway gate adds about $800 to $2,200 to a fence quote in published Ontario installer pricing, and a walk gate about $500 to $1,500, on top of the per-linear-foot fence price. Those ranges cover materials and installation.
Ask the installer to put the width of the opening, the gate material, the hinges and latch, and how the gate posts are set and how deep in the quote, with the gate priced as its own line. If the gate material differs from the fence, ask about it explicitly.
The Fence By-law, as published on ottawa.ca, has a specific rule for gates. In a side or rear yard, a gate may exceed the 213 cm fence height limit by up to 30 cm. That allowance does not apply in a front yard. Where a driveway meets the street, every lot, not just corner lots, has a visibility triangle: no fence or gate over 75 cm within a triangle measured 2 m along the lot line and 2 m along the driveway edge from where they meet. No fence or gate may stand on City property, including the road allowance.
Ask the City first if you are unsure whether the gate sits in the front yard or a side yard, because that decides whether the 1 m limit or the side-yard allowance applies.
