Is $2,000 for a driveway gate too much in Gloucester?

Published Ontario installer pricing puts driveway gates at roughly $800 to $2,200 installed, so the figure you were quoted sits near the top of that range but inside it. Whether it is fair for your Gloucester job depends on what is included.

What a fair quote shows for a driveway gate is each item as its own line: the material and style, the width of the opening, how the gate posts are set and how deep, the hardware, and any removal of an old gate or fence section. Ask the installer to break those out so two quotes for the same opening can be compared item by item.

A few Gloucester-specific rules apply here. The driveway triangle in the City of Ottawa Fence By-law (No. 2003-462, s.4) limits any fence or gate to 75 cm within a triangle formed by measuring 2 m along the lot line and 2 m along the driveway edge where the driveway meets the street. In a front yard the limit is 1 m, gate included. If your driveway runs along a corner lot, the zoning by-law (2026-50, s.216 and 2008-250, s.57) also restricts solid obstructions over 0.75 m within a triangle measured 6 m along each street lot line from the corner; confirm the layout with the City if that applies to your property. No building permit is needed for a gate that does not enclose a pool.

Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2002, a written contract is required for work over $50 agreed to away from the contractor's place of business, and you have 10 days to cancel after receiving your copy. The contractor cannot charge more than 10 per cent above a written estimate.

The form on this page lets you send your job details to fence installers listed in the Ottawa Construction Network directory, so you can collect a second or third quote on the same scope.

Before you put a signature on anything, ask the installer to confirm in writing exactly what the gate width, material, post method and any removal work are, so you know exactly what the quoted price buys.
