How We Set These Ranges
Reviewed 2026-09-30
Prices
The ranges come from fence price pages published by Ottawa and Ontario installers and a Canadian fence retailer, read in September 2026. We show a range only where at least two independent pages gave figures for the same job; two pages with matching tables counted as one. An Ottawa directory page dated later than the day we read it was left out. We never name a source, and we label every figure as published pricing, not a price you will be charged.
That leaves no range for ornamental aluminum, where the pages differed by about four times. We found one figure or none for wrought iron, fence repairs, post replacement or a property survey; those pages and lines say so instead.
The fence run drawings
The drawing adds up the sides you enter and multiplies them by the published per-foot range for the material, then adds the published gate and removal ranges. The outline is drawn to scale from your numbers, but it is not a site plan: it does not know your lot lines, your grade or where the corner and driveway triangles fall.
The rules
Height, triangle, material and upkeep rules are quoted from the City of Ottawa Fence By-law, No. 2003-462, as published on ottawa.ca, with section numbers on each page. The corner sight triangle comes from Ottawa's zoning by-laws. Where we found nothing, for example on a fence built on a retaining wall, the pages say to confirm with the City.
What we left out
No price differences between neighbourhoods, no typical yard sizes, no lifespans and no permit fees: a residential fence that does not enclose a pool needs no building permit in Ottawa. We are a matching service, not a fence company, and we do not screen or verify installers.
